Sarcococca humilis 'Sarsid1' Fragrant Valley™ PP# 19942

Fragrance is not something you think of in the winter garden, unless you live in a place where there is no winter, right? But what if we told you about a plant that not only bloomed in late winter in zones 6-8, but that those blooms were scented with a heavenly hyacinth-like fragrance when other things haven’t even begun to wake up from their winter slumber?

As part of the Himalayan Wonders series, Fragrant Valley is an evergreen groundcover that will slowly fill in your shady trouble spots. It is such a shade lover that too much sun makes is unhappy. Sweetbox has always been a garden favorite in cottage or naturalized gardens to give a rich, deep green base for other plants.

Joseph's Take

Joseph's Take

Sweetbox does well when planted in front of other foundation shrubs like rhododendron or mountain laurel. They all prefer well drained soil and plenty of shade. Planting a paperbush nearby would also be a good idea as the paperbush will bloom a few weeks before the sweetbox, both have a really nice sweet smell during late winter and early spring. Fragrant Mountain Sweetbox is similar in foliage texture, it gets a little taller and wider than the Fragrant Vally.
