Daphne odora 'Aureo-marginata'

Native to several Southern Asian countries, Daphne odora which means fragrant daphne has interesting ties to other cultures. This particular aromatic flowering plant symbolizes immortality in Greek mythology from which is named after. Daphne, a water sprite, who was sought after by Apollo and was transformed into a tree shrub to conceal her from him. Winter Daphne, both cultivation and native development, has been around since before 1309 as seen from Japanese writings. There exists a few different forms of Daphne odora of which we offer two: Variegated Winter Daphne and Maejiima Winter Daphne. The one you see here (variegated winter daphne) differs slightly in appearance offering a more formal presentation with its globose shaped light rosy-white blooms which appear like buttons against the handsome array of elliptical evergreen leaves that are slightly edged in gold. Preferably grown in full shade to partial sun with soil that drains well similar to that of laurels in terms of composition. It does not grow incredibly tall, only reaching around 4 ft and the same in width which makes it great for blending shade areas or in containers anywhere its attractive atmosphere can be appreciated.

Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting Daphne as they prefer less watering than you might think. In clay soil we prefer planting with pine bark soil conditioner for Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel,  Azalea, and Daphne.
