One of the most popular Japanese maples used often in landscapes today has an unfortunately weird name. Have you ever wondered why it’s called “bloodgood”? Can it be used in transfusions? Does it have blood that is good? Probably not. Is it the color of good blood? Well, yes sort of. Turns out, this Japanese maple is believed to be an old variety from the Netherlands that was sold to Bloodgood Nurseries in New York in the late 19th century. The Bloodgood Maple is always a great choice for a sturdy, striking accent tree in a home or commercial landscape. It even does well in a container, and is one of the hardiest Japanese maples. Its burgundy-red foliage turns bright scarlet as temperatures drop. Use this upright maple as a front yard centerpiece or in a bed surrounded by evergreen shrubs and grasses. Reaches 10-25 feet tall and wide mature depending on conditions.


Our Japanese Maples are sold in 2 or 3 gallon pots. They are larger and more mature than a typical one gallon specimen.
