Illicium x 'Orion'

Star Flower Orion Illicium Anise derives its botanical name from the Latin word meaning "alluring," reflecting its ornamental appeal and aromatic qualities. This geographically diverse genus boasts native populations spanning eastern Asia through North America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, each adapted to distinct regional conditions. As a shade-loving understory shrub, Orion thrives in moist, well-established woodland settings and partially shaded garden environments where it develops naturally without excessive sun exposure. Its preference for consistent moisture and dappled light makes it an excellent choice for creating layered, naturalistic plantings beneath taller canopy trees.

Star Flower Orion Illicium Anise is a First Editions hybrid developed by Tom Ranney at North Carolina State University's Mountain Crop Improvement Lab, combining I. floridanum and I. mexicanum genetics. This evergreen shade-dweller produces fragrant, pale white star-shaped flowers twice annually—first in spring (April–May) and again in fall (September–November)—with sporadic blooms between cycles. Both foliage and flowers emit a distinctive anise fragrance, while unique star-shaped seed pods extend seasonal interest. Hardy and moisture-loving, it thrives in shaded sites with afternoon sun protection and well-drained soil. Pair with dwarf azaleas, hostas, ferns, or sedges to create a sophisticated shade garden composition.
