Oregon Grape Mahonia "Underway"
Mahonia x media 'Underway'
A new addition this year to our selection and your soon to be garden collection, the Underway Mahonia is less well known than most mahonias and has a rather compact nature with an upright growth habit. Its mature size reaches around our estimated measurements of 6 ft high and 5 ft wide, but is variable based on growing location and care. They are most notably grown for their spiky, pinnate, holly-like foliage which features long upright blooming racemes which burst with golden, lemon-yellow flowers. This beautiful combination of color and texture make mahonias in general very practical for decorative purposes as well as for function as a border or hedge in landscaping and gardening. An interesting fact about the Oregon Grape varieties is that they produce these grape-like berries which are used in some regions to make jams and jellies. They are edible but very tart.
