The 'Soft Caress' Mahonia is a far cry from its cousin, the standard Leatherleaf Mahonia with its aggressive spiny leaves.  The 'Soft Caress' is a gentler, softer dwarf variety from the Southern Living Plants Collection.  It has narrow bamboo-like leaves and upright spikes of yellow blooms in early winter, providing a tiny beacon during the bleakness of winter. Use this dwarf mahonia as an accent in a rock garden or Asian-themed garden.  In a mixed border, try pairing 'Soft Caress' Mahonia with the reds of 'Firepower' Nandina, or the contrasting foliage of a hydrangea or hosta for an interesting display of different textures.
