Limelight Prime Hydrangea
Hydrangea paniculata 'SMNHPPH' USPP 32,511
The growers at Proven Winners are always looking to improve on past successes, as evidenced by new and exciting varieties coming out all the time. But some plants-such as the Limelight hydrangea-have little need for improvement. Nevertheless, some subtle yet notable changes are front and center in the Limelight Prime Hydrangea. Like Limelight, Limelight Prime is an upright paniculata hydrangea that can tolerate full sun. Prime, however, stays smaller than its parent (about two-thirds the size of Limelight) and has extra stiff stems, reducing the likelihood of flopping branches and blooms following a heavy rain. Blooms first emerge lime green in color, then slowly change to a bubblegum or fruit punch pink as the weather cools off. If grown in the south, consider planting in a place with some protection from very hot sun. If the people at Proven Winners improve Limelight any more, what will be next…Limelight Optimus? Limelight Prime Returns? We will just have to wait and see. Try planting this deciduous shrub in a group of three or five surrounded by your favorite evergreen. Passers by will go out of their way to see this sequel!
