Bonanza Gold Barberry
Berberis thunbergii 'Bonanza Gold'
This bright dwarf form has yellow to gold showy foliage that turns orange and red in the fall, with dark red berries that can persist into the next growing season after winter (like other barberries), depending on the activity of the birds in your area! Hardy zone 4 through 8, this squat deer-resistant prickly plant adds interest to your landscape season to season, and is especially beautiful with other colorful dwarf barberries against a darker evergreen backdrop.
Berberis thunbergii, as a species, has edible leaves and berries--both of which are very tart, packing a high vitamin C content as well as having other reported medicinal uses. There is a history of adding barberry fruits (normally the European variety, which is sweeter) to jams. If you don’t want to taste some lemony leaves, you could try your hand at making a yellow dye from the roots or stem trimmings. This ornamental has more than one use!
