Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting any Mountain Laurel as they prefer fall planting with less watering than you might think. In NC our soil is clay so we prefer to use pine bark soil conditioner when planting Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and Azalea.
Show Time Mountain Laurel
Kalmia latifolia 'Show Time'
This taller Mountain Laurel gets about 6 feet tall in 10 years and would only be called ‘Red’ due to its flower buds, flower open to a bright pink and are larger than most Kalmia at over 1 inch diameter. Great for mass plantings, informal hedges, and/or in the back of a larger garden bed with some space to grow, this evergreen is an easy shrub to grow in well draining acidic soils. Pruning shouldn’t be needed on this slow grower! Best in zones 3 through 8, this native plant prefers full shade.
