The Spreading Japanese Plum Yew, also known as Cehpalotaxus harringtonia 'Prostrata', is the perfect choice for those large barren shady spots. This groundcover is evergreen, grows neatly and deer stay away. The glossy, dark green 4 to 6 inch needled leaves grow slowly but at mature height will grow 2 to 3 feet, with a spread of 3 to 4 feet.
In spring, the new growth on the Spreading Japanese Plum Yew is a pale lime green, which is clearly defined against the dark contrasting green of the mature needles. The growth habit is low with arching branches, creating an attractive form that does not get out of control. This shrub is hardy from zones 6 to 9.
