Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting any Mountain Laurel as they prefer fall planting with less watering than you might think. In NC our soil is clay so we prefer to use pine bark soil conditioner when planting Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and Azalea.
Elf Mountain Laurel
Kalmia latifolia 'Elf'
Think Lord of the Ring elves, not Christmas elves for this fanciful beauty. Delicately pink buds open up into a nearly pure white flower that stays on this evergreen shrub for weeks. The leaves are smaller on this dwarf, while the flowers stay nearly the same size as it’s larger Mountain Laurel cousins that have grown into trees in the wild. Year-round glossy foliage has this mounded Laurel an easy one to fit into tighter spots in the landscape and is ideal as a foundation planting.
