Pieris japonica 'Planow'

A new offering from the Southern Living Plant Collection, Mountain Snow™ Pieris is a shade-loving plant which sports excellent cold tolerance and lovely flower buds when most plants are still in their winter slumber. New foliage ranges from bronze to light green, later maturing to dark green, creating a multi-colored effect. In summer, white pendulous buds resembling tiny strings of pearls abundantly adorn the branches. The buds sustain through the winter, and finally open to white blooms in spring. Evergreen, compact in size. Suitable as a low hedge, specimen, or container plant.

Joseph's Take

Joseph's Take

My issue with Pieris has always been their slow rate of growth, Mountain Snow™ grows as fast as a holly. Its new growth is very bright as in the photos which darkens to a deep green and still flowers in very early spring. Good companion plants are Mountain Laurel, Azalea, and Paperbush as a nearby speciman.
