Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku'

Distinctive for its authentic, unique presentation during the leafless winters of zones 5-8, the Coral Bark Japanese Maple is rightly named for its reddish-pink coral colored bark which will be sure to contrast brilliantly against evergreens and the brown unentertaining twigs that riddle your garden. Akin to other Acer palmatum varieties, its year-round interest begins in spring and cycles beautifully through winter. During the spring when life begins to appear from the hibernal months of winter, seven-lobed lime green leaves make their entrance known as if inviting the warmth of late spring-early summer during which, they transition to a deeper green. The show then takes on a more fall-oriented seasonal change, with its foliage turning into dramatic shades of yellow and orange. Just when fall begins to close and winter begins, this illustrious tree transforms to reveal its flaming coral bark which only deepens as winter takes hold of every other piece on your landscape. With its performance sure to dignify your garden year-round, like every plant we offer, it is a reliable and honorable addition to present itself in your landscape for years to come.

Our Japanese Maples are sold in 2 or 3 gallon pots. They are larger and more mature than a typical one gallon specimen. Since all Japanese Maples are generally slow growing, it is advised to choose a more mature plant when installing into your landscape. If you would like a current photo of any specimen, please send us an email.

Japanses Maples are easy to grow in a sunny spot with space to spread out.  A little dappled shade in the afternoon is a good idea in warmer states as the leaves can be stressed in the hottest months of the year.
