 Berberis thunbergii 'Arlene' pp#31,117

Sunjoy Sequins® Barberry is a Proven Winners edition that is new to us this spring of 2020. It's new growth is tipped with white and red while the inner leaves are an Army greenish color. Dwarf Barberries can be used as short hedges and as colorful accent plants in any landscape. Sunjoy Sequins® is especially resistant to summer leaf burn.

Berberis thunbergii, as a species, has edible leaves and berries--both of which are very tart, packing a high vitamin C content as well as having other reported medicinal uses with them and the roots. There is a history of adding barberry fruits (normally the European variety, which is sweeter) to jams. If you don’t want to taste some lemony leaves, you could try your hand at making a yellow dye from the roots or stem trimmings. This stunning ornamental has more than one use!

Joseph's Take

Joseph's Take

I've always used Dwarf Barberry and bright yellow Spirea as accent plants in a larger landscape. I will often plant groups of three to five of them near a sidewalk entrance or near large green Azaleas or Holly. Both Barberry and Spirea love a hard trimming each winter. I always cut them back by half their size each year as this encourages a more vigorous and beautiful growth habit the following year.

Barberry has really nice fall color as their leaves change.
