Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting Rhododendron as they prefer less watering than you might think. In clay soil we prefer planting with pine bark soil conditioner for Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, Azalea.
The rhododendron has been a long-time favorite to provide strong structure and lovely spring color in the shade garden. But unless you are a baron or a countess or an early investor in Tesla with acres and acres upon which to build bonfires of Benjamins, you may not have the space to accommodate the mature size of an older variety of rhododendron. If you cannot be swayed from the glorious rhodie, then consider Pomegranate Splash. Having a maximum height of only 5 feet in ten years (not the normal 8 feet), Pomegranate Splash Rhododendron is well-suited to smaller shade gardens or as a foundation shrub. The unusual flower features undulating edges, a pinkish red center and outside wavy margins. The softball-sized bloom (called a truss), has 14 (fourteen!!!) flowers of jam-packed floral splendor. Planted in a group of three or more, this would make a fantastic evergreen screen for a shady yard. Planted under the canopy of a Japanese maple along with azaleas, hellebore, heuchera and yellow carex grass, your yard will look like a million bucks!
