Rhododendron x 'P.J.M.'

When in full bloom and covered in an abundance of lavender flowers, the P.J.M. Rhododendron looks more like an azalea than a rhodie from a distance.  The foliage is small and dark green and is often obscured by the flowers when in bloom. During the winter, the foliage turns a deep purple, almost brownish hue.  Plant near an Aucuba Picturata or an Illicium 'Woodland Ruby' to accentuate the contrasting winter colors.  P.J.M. is durable and has shown tolerance for heat and cold. Mature size is between 3 and 5 feet, so situate at the back of a bed and interplant with azalea and fern for a lush woodland garden.

Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting Rhododendron as they prefer less watering than you might think. In clay soil we prefer planting with pine bark soil conditioner for Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, Azalea.
