Mr. Bowling Ball Arborvitae
Thuja occidentalis 'Congabe'
If you are familiar with our popular ‘Fire Chief’ Arborvitae, then this globe shaped dwarf evergreen will feel familiar in its cute spherical form but more so in its luscious green color. Because of its dwarf nature of only growing around 3 feet in diameter, it is definitely a lovely addition to have along a path or just accenting or rounding out a sharp corner around the house. The story behind this adorable little mound is pretty lucky. Its cultivar was found in a cemetery by Joe Stupka, a popular nurseryman and propagator. He said it was barely alive when he found it so he grafted it and hoped for the best. The name has changed a few times due to licensing but the more popular and catchy ‘Mr. Bowling Ball’ has come to earn the most permanence.
