Blue Arrow Juniper
Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow'
Faring well in colder climates, Blue Arrow Juniper grows rather quickly in a slender column-like habit. Boasting its dramatic blue-green foliage year round, it quickly reaches its mature height of around 12 ft and width of a mere 2 ft. Fairing from zones 3-7, the Blue Arrow is not particular about soil composition allowing it to be a hardy evergreen in general. Junipers are well known for their berries being used to flavor gin, but what is neat about this juniper in particular is its wood. Being akin to Western Redcedar, its aromatic heartwood is used in furniture to repel insects as well as accent pieces for interior designs. The wood also contains natural oils which greatly increase the plants resistance to drought and decay. Its narrow growth habit reminds me of a Mediterranean style garden.
