Camellia japonica 'Black Tie'

The Black Tie Camellia offers lots of small, double blooms of deep red, producing a striking contrast to glossy dark green leaves. The flowers appear in the middle of the blooming season, which begins in winter and extends into spring. This plant is a large evergreen shrub to small tree, depending on pruning. Prune after flowering, just before new growth starts in the spring. Selective, light pruning and shaping is recommended and shearing is not. Camellias do not recover well from harsh pruning practices. Like most camellias, it will benefit most from a bit of shelter from the wind and hot sun, since buds and leaves are susceptible to the extreme elements.

Be sure to use a well drained soil medium when planting any Camellia as they prefer less watering than you might think. In NC our soil is clay so we prefer to use pine bark soil conditioner when planting Camellia, Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and Azalea.
